On March 7th, Sugarloaf CID, Gas South District, and The Hudgens Center for Art & Learning hosted Draw the District: A Chalk Arts Festival, presented by Coca-Cola. This “first-ever” event for our area activated public spaces outside of The Hudgens Center and brought together competing chalk artists, various artisan vendors, and delicious food trucks for a lively atmosphere.
With over 35 artists competing in over 25 chalk entries as individuals, students, or groups, our judges enjoyed reviewing and scoring in the previous categories using a custom app built by local art advocate and event volunteer, Aura-Leigh Sanders. The People’s Choice category was determined by attendees scanning QR codes at each of the chalk squares to vote for their favorite. The Kid’s Choice category engaged our younger event attendees by having children drop a physical ticket in the bucket of their favorite chalk square.
Thank you to our judges below for spending an afternoon with us!
- Gwinnett County District 1 Commissioner, Kirkland Carden
- Create Gwinnett Executive Director, Chris Cannon
- Board Member for The Gwinnett Ballet and Create Gwinnett, Amy Bray
This event also featured gathering public input as part of the Sugarloaf Small Area Plan with the assistance of Gwinnett County Planning & Development staff and consultants from TSW. We heard lots of great feedback about what people want to see and do in Sugarloaf in the future.
Check out the winners and their stunning chalk art!
